How a Clinical Registry Differs From a PMCF Study
The two terms get used interchangeably, but they're not the same thing. A PMCF study is a manufacturer-run, protocol-driven study built around one specific device, conducted to satisfy the post-market clinical follow-up obligation in MDR Annex XIV, Part B. A registry is broader: it's one of the two specific methods Annex XIV, Part B names for fulfilling that obligation, alongside a dedicated PMCF study, but registries also exist independently of any single manufacturer's MDR obligation, often spanning multiple products, indications, or even a whole national specialty, a national joint registry, for example. A "PMCF registry" is simply a registry built or used to meet that specific regulatory purpose.
